Burmese Python Snakes Discovered in Garage

King Lake, NE – The Nebraska Humane Society took three illegal snakes from a garage in King Lake Friday.  The Burmese Python snakes are all longer than eight feet, which makes them illegal.

The Humane Society received an anonymous tip early this week about a large snake, roaming the neighborhood, recently flooded by heavy rain.  Officers checking on the tip learned the snake had returned to it’s home.  They discovered all three snakes in the garage, however the owner refused to surrender them.

Humane Society officers and Douglas County Sheriff’s deputies returned with a search warrant Friday.  The owner was cited for keeping the illegal snakes in his home.  Humane Society Vice-President Mark Langan says Randy Walker was verbally abusive when officers tried to take the snakes, “Animals cause a lot of emotion, a lot of drama when we try to seize illegal pets. These snakes are nothing to mess with. They can pose harm to individuals, they can pose harm to dogs, cats and other small animals. That’s why it’s illegal to keep them.”

King Lake is in western Douglas County, but Omaha laws on exotic pets are enforced.

Langan says the snakes have been well cared for.
