WILDLIFE officers are searching for this large crocodile lurking in the Barron River at Kamerunga.
Rangers conducted surveys of the river last night after the croc – estimated at more than 3m – was seen in an area popular for walking, picnics and fishing.
Mulgrave MP Curtis Pitt said authorities should not take any chances.
“Where you have confirmed sightings of crocodiles at known swimming holes, including recreational areas people frequent, people must come first,” he said.
Mr Pitt has campaigned for crocodiles to be removed from popular recreational areas.
Those who saw the croc yesterday morning near the old Barron River bridge say it is 3m or longer, and that it appeared aggressive.
Victor Christie, of Weipa, said the croc swam towards his family as they stood near the riverbank.
“He’s a dirty big black one. He’s got a three to four foot head and he was about 15cm between the eyes,” Mr Christie said.
