It’s something you don’t expect to see around Duck Creek in Davenport. On Wednesday, four friends were hanging out near the creek after school. They were throwing sticks and rocks into the creek when they discovered an alligator.
“Well you don’t find an alligator in Davenport like every second of your life.”
At first, friends Tytan, Zach, Bailey and Scotty thought it was a lizard.
“We went down there to make sure it was an alligator, and then we went closer and poked it with a stick.”
Once the kids realized what they found – they told their moms.
“It was frozen so we knew it was going to be dead, but we had hopes.”
But the four won’t have anything to “show” for the next show-and-tell at schooL.
Workers with the Humane Society of Scott County picked-up the alligator Thursday afternoon. They will verify the species and then turn it over to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
This isn’t the first time an alligator has been found in the area. The humane society took one away from a resident about a month ago. It’s is illegal to keep an alligator in Davenport.
