Peterborough’s Junior Field Naturalists will begin this year’s program with a special outing Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the Camp Kawartha Environment Centre at Trent University. The Reptile at Risk program, run through Ontario Nature, will be featured.
“It’s looking pretty ssssspecial,” says Neil Fortin, program co-ordinator, “and features a hands-on display and discussion about some of Ontario’s cool (or should we say cold blooded!) reptilian friends.”
Past Reptile at Risk shows have displayed black rat snakes, hognose snakes and various turtles.
The Junior Field Naturalists, part of Peterborough Field Naturalists, meet once a month, usually on the third or fourth Sunday in the afternoon at the Camp Kawartha Environment Centre with occasionally outings to local natural spaces. The program is designed for children ages five to 12.
“The outings are a blend of engaging active nature/environmental activities that include hikes, crafts, guest leaders and projects that help out the Environment Centre as well as the community at large,” Fortin said.
The program is co-ordinated by Fortin, who is also the head of outdoor education at the Kawartha Outdoor Education Centre, and Dan Chronowic, a local teacher, outdoor educator and naturalist.
