GONZALES, LA (WAFB) – A Louisiana woman recently got the scare of her life after buying a used car and finding it came fully-loaded with a python that apparently liked fried chicken.
Marquita Lawrence said the unimaginable happened along Airline Highway and East Cornerview Street in Gonzales.
“I left Raisin’ Canes and I opened up my box,” she said. “I didn’t even get a chance to eat any of the food. I love Raisin’ Canes. I looked down. I could see something moving in the corner of my eye. He smelled the food and he came slithering out from under the passenger’s seat. I’m like, ‘Oh my God, there’s a snake!'”
Lawrence said she just bought a Toyota Camry from Hollingsworth Richards Used Cars in Gonzales. Officials there told her a couple tried to buy the same car about a month ago. They drove it around for a few weeks, but didn’t close the deal. They did, however, lose their ball python, which is the same snake Lawrence had the pleasure of finding.
“I threw it in park and hauled tail and I did not look back. I’m running across the highway screaming, ‘There’s a snake in my car, there’s a snake in my car!'” she explained.
Lawrence ditched her car in the middle of the road. She bolted across the busy intersection even though she was barefoot at the time. People were slamming on their brakes left and right, she recalled. She almost hit the car in front of her and the car behind her nearly knocked her over.
“I’m still shaking. My hands cannot stop shaking. That’s how nervous I am,” she added.
Managers at the used car dealership said they had no idea there was a python left behind. Lawrence has since returned the car. She’s upset about the situation, having driven around town with her 3-year-old son in the back seat with the python nearby.
The dealership called animal control. The python was found and returned to its owner. Lawrence said she is now paranoid and checks under seats before sitting down, no matter where she is.
