Adrian Diaz thought he was seeing a bullfrog coming out of the water as he fished Wednesday afternoon at Summit Lake.
Instead, a young alligator came walking up on shore to where Diaz was standing and began eating his fish ”right off the pole.”
”So I got duct tape off my fishing pole and taped its mouth up,” said the 49-year-old Akron resident. ”I wanted to keep it, but my wife told me it was her or the gator.”
He said he has a couple of large, exotic snakes at home that are registered with the county.
Animal Control Warden Donald Miller, who came to pick up the young reptile on Wednesday evening, confirmed it is an alligator.
”It’s a Florida alligator, not a croc,” he said, guessing it to be about 2 years old. ”But believe me, he could bite. Somebody’s brought him back from Florida.”
Miller said he will find a rescue group to care for the alligator for now.
”This is a hard one,” Miller said. ”It’s going to have to be shipped to Florida.”
Diaz said he was trying to catch turtles and catfish, but only get
ting bluegill when the alligator suddenly appeared out of the water.
He said that when he grabbed the little alligator, it began making noises and a larger alligator — possibly its mother — appeared.
”It had to be over 6 feet,” Diaz said.
Figuring he was no match for a gator that size, he said he left the area as quickly as possible with the small gator in hand.
But he’s planning to go back early today with the hope of seeing the larger reptile again.
”I go fishing every day,” Diaz said, either at Summit Lake, Lake Anna [in Barberton] or the Berlin Dam. But this is the first time he’s seen an alligator.
”Whoever’s doing it needs to stop putting the animals in that water before somebody gets hurt,” Diaz said.
