Tiger and brown snakes have been seen along the Yarra River while calls for snake removals to the suburbs have surged since the start of summer as warm weather and a search for food bring the cold-blooded creatures out and about.
Snake handler and remover Raymond Hoser, of Snakebusters, had more than 15 call-outs last week to Melbourne suburbs, including one snake at South Oakleigh Primary School.
“This is peak season for snakes,” Mr Hoser said. “For every snake that’s seen, there are 100 that aren’t seen. They commonly live around the Yarra River.”
He said the snakes often moved into yards or homes while looking for a resting place with the right temperature. Wyndham and Hume councils have issued warnings to residents to be on the lookout for snakes. Maribyrnong, Hobsons Bay and Brimbank councils also offer advice on how to deal with them.
Mr Hoser warned snakes commonly found in Melbourne were venomous and should be handled only by removers.
People who see a snake in a built-up area are urged to contact their council.
