A Tampa couple was arrested Tuesday after authorities confiscated 19 dogs, 11 cats, a ball python and a hedgehog living in inhumane conditions, according to Hillsborough County Animal Services.
The animals were living in hot, smelly, filthy conditions at a home in the Rembrandt Gardens neighborhood in South Tampa, said animal services spokeswoman Marti Ryan.
Tadishi Rubright and her fiancee, Matthew Poole, were charged with seven felony and 20 misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty.
The cats were covered in scabies and many of the animals had large ticks, she said. Animal service workers found 3-inch cockroaches scurrying on the ground.
“This is not the worst we have ever seen, but it was disgusting nonetheless,” Ryan said.
Ryan said animal services has been investigating Poole and Rubright since March. She said they were defiant and refused to change until they were ordered to do so.
Ryan said Rubright and Poole described themselves as animal rescue workers.
